Yesterday, Sunday 20 March 2016, marked the United Nations’ annual day of celebration and recognition of happiness.
In 2012, a UN Assembly Resolution stated that:
“The General Assembly… conscious that the pursuit of happiness is a
fundamental human goal… recognizing also the need for a more inclusive,
equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable
development, poverty eradication, happiness and the well-being of all peoples,
decides to proclaim 20 March the International Day of Happiness, invites all
Member States, organizations of the United Nations system and other
international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, including
non-governmental organizations and individuals, to observe the International
Day of Happiness in an appropriate manner, including through education and
public awareness-raising activities.”
– United Nations General
Assembly, Resolution adopted by the General Assembly on 28 June 2012
As an organisational value, we at Endeavour try to practise the pursuit happiness in all its forms – every day in every way. It is gratifying to see that an institution as esteemed as the United Nations has deemed that happiness should have its own international day of celebration. In digging out the actual resolution (above) the context for celebrating happiness at a global, sovereign state and individual level is highlighted.
It’s tough in many parts of the world right now and so that means understanding and nurturing our own positive sense of self is all the more important. It means we may have vitality and energy left over for others. Even though the International Day of Happiness was yesterday, what are your reflections about how might you share those with others this week…perhaps beyond?
